Its Thursday, technically my Friday considering I don’t have class tomorrow, but in a way I have lost track of the days. Its been raining for four maybe five consecutive days now and it is starting to seep into my mood. Everyone here seems prepared for it thought, the Italians all seem to have umbrella’s that match everything else they own so they manage to dress well, even in the rain. Our Italian teacher tried to tell us a joke that punned umbrella with Umbria, the name of the region in which Orvieto is located (like Tuscany to the north). Apparently if you speak fluent Italian it’s a stitch, but considering the fact that I harbor a deep seated dislike for puns and have had all of three Italian lessons, the joke went a bit over my head.
Other than that, it has been a relaxing week. I’m getting plenty of reading done,. In addition to my course work I am making my way through a collection of short stories my Marquez. I especially recommend a short story entitled “Eyes of a Blue Dog” for anyone that is interested. My thanks to Kayleigh for that book recommendation.
We’re going to Rome again on Sunday, for what I am not sure, but I look forward to it once again. Our director did an excellent job guiding us through the city last time which is quite a feet considering there are about 26 of us and Rome isn’t exactly a small city. Here’s hoping for some sun…Traditionally this program focuses more on the history and art of Rome, but the way it worked out this semester, the focus shifted more towards Rome, which so far hasn’t been a disappointment since I have nothing to compare it to. I was a bit apprehensive at first since Rome was the one Italian city I consistently heard was not worth visiting. It helps thought that our instructor lived there as a student for a year though so he knows most of the shortcuts and cheap restaurants. So while its pretty much impossible for 26 American students in Rome to blend into the surroundings, I at least don’t spend the day mortified.
Saturday 5 or six of us are jumping on a train south with no particular destination in mind and plan on hopping off after 2 or 3 hours I suppose. I’ll let everybody know if anything of interest comes from that. And again, I don’t have access to the bandwidth needed to post pictures so my apologies. If you are interested, there are a number up on facebook.
To my family…Know that I miss you and love you all very much. Calling cards are absurdly expensive, but I’ll try to get a hold of you all soon.
That’s it for now, time for a glass of wine and a walk before dinner. Until next time…
